Osmani International Airport, Sylhet, was built in 1944-1945 to counter Japanese aggression from Burma. Previously known as Sylhet Civil Airport, it was renamed Osmani International Airport in honor of General M A G Osmani. In 1986, it became a full-fledged domestic airport. In 1998, it expanded to accommodate medium-sized aircraft. In 2002, it was designated an international airport, receiving the first international arrival flight from Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited. In 2006, improvements included a new terminal building, jetways, and taxiways. In 2010, a refueling station was constructed. Currently, domestic and international passenger and cargo flights operate from the airport.
