Ritu Akter | Climate Resilience | Child Marriage

Child marriage in Bangladesh is a major issue, with most girls dropping out of school due to factors such as poverty, lack of social safety, natural disasters, and weak enforcement of the Child Marriage Restraint Act of 2017. The country ranks among the top 10 hotspots for girls’ rights, and the rise in child marriage since the Covid pandemic has made it difficult for international organizations to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5.3 of eliminating child marriage by 2030. Climate change is also a significant factor, with floods, tropical cyclones, storm surges, and droughts becoming more frequent and severe.
